Echos From The Holocaust
Oboe, viola, and piano
Echoes from the Holocaust was written in 1993 at the request of oboist Sally Bloom. Ms. Bloom had asked for a “sad piece;” she might have gotten more than she asked for. Echoes from the Holocaust is a set of variations based on the opening oboe melody, which is derived from two songs written during the holocaust by composers who later died in the death-camps. The often-agitated music contrasts with a peaceful middle section beginning with a statement of the initial melody in the viola, followed by a piano chorale and then an ornamental variation for all three instruments. The agitated music returns, but the work ends quietly.
